EMG (Electromyogram)

Health Tools

An electromyogram (EMG) is used to measure the electrical activity of muscles at rest and during contraction. When muscles are active, they produce an electrical current. This current is usually proportional to the level of the muscle activity.

Nerve conduction studies measure how well and how fast the nerves can send electrical signals.

EMGs can be used to detect abnormal electrical activity of muscle that can occur in many diseases and conditions, including muscular dystrophy, inflammation of muscles, pinched nerves, peripheral nerve damage. Nerve and muscle disorders cause the muscles to react in abnormal ways.
