Bone Density (DEXA) Test
A Bone density test is mostly used to screen for and detect the early stages of osteoporosis, a condition defined by a decreased density of normal bone. The test measures the absorption of x-rays in specific areas of the skeleton. Most often, the bone density test measures the hips and the spine. The DEXA scan involves a much smaller radiation exposure than a standard chest x-ray.
What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a condition that causes weakening of the bones in your body. Osteoporosis increases your chance of sustaining a broken bone. Broken bones can cause significant problems, especially when a spine fracture or broken hip occurs. Because of these concerns, all people should understand their chance of developing osteoporosis, and if they need steps to prevent the development or progression of osteoporosis.
What does DEXA stand for?
Dexa stands for ‘Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry’. It is the most commonly used test for measuring bone mineral density. It is one of the most accurate ways to diagnosis Osteopenia or Osteoporosis.
This test is so accurate that your follow up dexa scan can be used to monitor your treatment to learn if your plan is working.
3. Who should have this test?
The National Osteoporosis Foundation’s guidelines state that women over 65, younger post menopausal women who have any of the osteoporosis risk factors, as well as those with specific fractures. However, men are also at risk for Osteoporosis as they age - especially if they have some of the causes of osteoporosis.
